Iran on Friday condemned attacks on merchant vessels carrying Indian crew members in the Gulf region after three Indian seafarers were killed earlier this week, saying such actions threatened international peace and security.

Three commercial vessels with Indian crew members have come under attack off the coast of Oman in recent days. One of the incidents resulted in the deaths of three Indian sailors on Wednesday.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei expressed condolences to the families of the victims and to the Indian government.

“We extend our sympathies to the families and friends of the slain Indian sailors and offer our sincere condolences to the Indian people and government,” Baqaei said in a post on X.

The spokesperson criticised the attacks on commercial shipping, saying such actions endangered civilian lives and posed a threat to global peace and maritime security.

The remarks came amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region following a series of incidents involving merchant vessels operating near key international shipping routes.
