Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday approved construction of a new administrative complex for Rajouri district and ordered a long-term disaster-resilient reconstruction plan after inspecting areas devastated by flash floods last month.
CM Omar toured flood-affected localities, met bereaved families and reviewed relief, rehabilitation and restoration efforts with senior officials following the July 19 floods that damaged roads, public infrastructure and residential areas.
During the visit, he inspected the existing Deputy Commissioner’s office, which has been declared structurally unsafe, and approved construction of a new Mini Secretariat.
Officials were directed to prepare a detailed project report for the facility, estimated to cost 5-6 billion rupees.
The CM said recent cloudbursts and flash floods underscored the need for infrastructure better suited to mountainous terrain.
He instructed the Public Works Department to recommend road designs capable of withstanding extreme weather events and ordered construction of flood protection works in vulnerable areas.
CM Omar also called for tighter regulation of construction along riverbanks and said preventive planning and resilient infrastructure would remain central to the government’s disaster management strategy.
