Authorities evacuated residents from vulnerable areas of a village in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday after a cloudburst triggered a sudden rise in the water level of a local stream, officials said.

The cloudburst struck Maya village in the Uri sector during the afternoon, sharply increasing the discharge of the Maya stream and raising fears of flash flooding in low-lying areas.

Police, civil administration officials, the Army and Health Department teams moved into the area to monitor the situation and coordinate emergency measures.

Police used public-address systems to warn residents living near the stream to move to safer locations, while the administration arranged vehicles to evacuate families from vulnerable areas.

“The evacuation was carried out as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of residents in view of the sudden rise in the water level,” an official said.

The water level began receding after the initial surge, easing fears of further flooding. Emergency teams remained on standby as authorities continued to monitor the stream.

Officials said there were no reports of deaths, injuries or property damage.

The administration urged residents living near water bodies to remain vigilant and follow official advisories as intermittent rainfall continued across the region.
