The Amarnath Yatra remained suspended on Sunday from Jammu towards Srinagar and the two principal base camps of Baltal and Pahalgam because of adverse weather and damage to sections of the yatra tracks.
Yatris who had already completed the yatra and visited the Amarnath Cave shrine were, however, being allowed to return towards Jammu, officials said.
According to the Joint Police Control Room in Baltal, 588 pilgrims – comprising 435 men, 83 women, four children and 66 sadhus — were travelling towards Jammu in 53 vehicles on Sunday morning.
The convoy was moving through the Ramban-Banihal section of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway when the latest report was issued.
No new yatra convoy was allowed to leave Jammu for the base camps.
The suspension on both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes came into effect on August 9 following recent rainfall, damage to sections of the tracks and forecasts of further adverse weather.
The suspension was aimed at maintaining the safety of yatris while restoration work was carried out on vulnerable sections of the routes.
