A 65-year-old retired forest guard died in a Srinagar hospital on Sunday, five days after he was injured in a road accident near the Lamber Toll Plaza on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

Abdul Rashid Wani, a resident of Ashar village, was critically injured on July 28 after being hit by a vehicle near the toll plaza, according to local residents.

His death has renewed demands from residents of nearby villages for safer pedestrian infrastructure along the highway.

Residents alleged that the stretch between Lamber Toll Plaza and Railway Chowk had become dangerous since the four-lane highway was commissioned about three years ago.

They said repeated requests for a pedestrian flyover or safe crossing had not been acted upon and claimed that at least four people and several livestock had died while crossing the highway.

The residents urged authorities to install immediate safety measures to prevent further fatalities.
