Torrential rain triggered flash floods and widespread waterlogging in Tangmarg and surrounding areas of north Kashmir on Tuesday, inundating homes, damaging orchards and disrupting traffic on the road to Gulmarg.

The Tangmarg-Gulmarg highway was submerged at several points, with floodwater flowing across the carriageway and slowing traffic.

Areas including Chanpora, Ferozpora, Kunzar, Hariwatno, Chandilora, Devdragar, Ongam, Qazipora and Solanga were affected as streams and drains overflowed.

In Chanpora, floodwaters entered a government middle school and residential houses. At Devdragar, the Bab Kol stream overflowed, flooding homes and orchards.

Residents said the water rose rapidly, leaving little time to move household goods and other belongings to safety.

The flooding also affected village roads, while blocked drains and overflowing streams compounded the disruption.

Residents called for restoration of damaged flood-protection infrastructure, clearance of drainage channels and assessment of losses suffered by households and orchardists.

They also sought permanent measures to reduce the risk of recurring flooding along vulnerable waterways.

Local officials, including the SDM and Tehsildar of Tangmarg, visited affected areas. No deaths were reported, although officials feared substantial damage to property and horticulture.
