National Conference President Farooq Abdullah on Monday urged the federal government to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, saying the people of the region could not be kept waiting indefinitely for promises repeatedly made by the authorities.

Leading an NC protest in New Delhi, Abdullah said the party had come to the capital to seek the restoration of the rights, dignity and constitutional status of the people of J&K.

The protest was held on the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session and was attended by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, ministers, lawmakers and party workers.

Delhi Police stopped the march before it reached Jantar Mantar, with the NC alleging that restrictions were imposed and tear gas was used.

Abdullah said the party’s demand was based on commitments made by the prime minister and home minister before Parliament, the Supreme Court and the people of J&K.

He said the restoration of statehood was essential to democratic accountability and political dignity and pledged to continue the campaign through peaceful and constitutional means.

Abdullah also voiced support for students protesting alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and called for their concerns to be addressed rather than suppressed.

He also appealed for the release of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, saying his concerns about the interests of people in Ladakh deserved attention.

The Centre has repeatedly said statehood would be restored at an appropriate time, but no formal timeline has been announced.
