Ronaldo turns back time as Portugal roars to life at World Cup 2026

‘There are times when you need a game like the first one in order to grow in the tournament’

For nearly two decades, Cristiano Ronaldo has defined football’s grandest stages. On a humid night in Houston, the Portuguese icon added yet another chapter to a career that long ago transcended generations.

At 41 years and 138 days old, Ronaldo delivered a vintage performance, scoring twice in Portugal’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan on Tuesday and reminding the world that even in his sixth FIFA World Cup, he remains capable of commanding the spotlight.

The performance did more than secure Portugal’s first win of the FIFA World Cup 2026. It placed Ronaldo alone in history.

According to FIFA.com, Ronaldo became the first player ever to score in six different FIFA World Cups. He also became the second-oldest goalscorer in tournament history, trailing only Cameroon’s Roger Milla, who scored at the age of 42 during the 1994 World Cup.

The achievement carried extra significance after Portugal’s frustrating opening match against Congo DR, when Ronaldo failed to find the net and questions surfaced about whether age had finally begun to catch up with the game’s enduring superstar.

Instead, Houston witnessed a familiar response.

Just six minutes into the contest, João Cancelo delivered a cross into the penalty area and Ronaldo reacted instinctively, converting from close range. The goal unleashed visible relief from the Portuguese captain, whose celebration reflected both joy and vindication.

Portugal never looked back.

Ronaldo’s influence stretched beyond his goals. During the first half, he cleverly distracted defenders on a set piece, helping create space for Nuno Mendes to score from a brilliantly executed free-kick in the 17th minute.

Then, moments before halftime, Ronaldo struck again.

Receiving the ball in space, he calmly guided his finish into the corner for his 10th career World Cup goal. The strike moved him past Portugal legend Eusébio as the nation’s all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup finals competition.

By then, Uzbekistan’s resistance had largely evaporated.

The World Cup debutants briefly thought they had produced another memorable moment when Azizjon Ganiev unleashed a spectacular long-range effort. However, the goal was ruled out following a foul in the buildup, denying Uzbekistan what would have been a rare bright spot in an increasingly difficult campaign.

Portugal continued to apply pressure after the break. An own goal by Uzbekistan goalkeeper Utkir Nematov in the 60th minute extended the lead, before substitute Rafa Leão completed the rout with a late finish in the 87th minute.

The result transformed the outlook in Group K.

Colombia remains top of the standings with six points from two matches, while Portugal moved into second place with four points. Congo DR sits third with one point, and Uzbekistan remains without a point after two defeats.

For Portugal manager Roberto Martínez, the dominant display represented the response he had hoped for after the team’s uneven tournament opener.

“This was the response we had in the dressing room,” Martínez told FIFA.com. “There are times when you need a game like the first one to grow in the tournament. Today we saw a team with the same attitude and commitment, but with greater maturity because it was no longer the opening match. I’m very pleased with the result.”

Ronaldo, meanwhile, remained focused on the collective objective despite another night of personal milestones.

“I’m very happy,” he told FIFA.com. “But for me, the most important thing is our work and the confidence we showed. The team performed really well and improved a lot. As the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining. Obviously, speaking personally, records are always nice, but my goal is always to help the national team achieve its objectives.”

Those objectives remain very much alive.

The tournament is still young, and Portugal knows tougher tests await. Yet on a night when younger stars such as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland have dominated World Cup conversations, it was football’s elder statesman who seized the headlines.

Again.

Because even at 41, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to find new ways to make history.
