Two people died on Wednesday after a vehicle veered off a mountain road and plunged into a gorge near the tourist resort of Pahalgam in Kashmir, police said.

The accident occurred around midday on the road leading to Aru, a popular tourist destination located several kilometres from Pahalgam in Anantnag district.

Police said the vehicle lost control before falling into a deep gorge.

One of the victims was identified as Imran Ahmad Ganai, 30, of Dailgam in Anantnag district.

Authorities said the identity of the second victim, a woman, had yet to be established.

Rescue teams comprising police personnel and local volunteers launched an operation in difficult terrain and later recovered the bodies, which were taken to a local hospital for legal formalities.

Police have opened an investigation into the cause of the crash and are examining whether road conditions, skidding or mechanical failure contributed to the accident.

The Aru route passes through mountainous terrain marked by narrow stretches and sharp bends, and authorities have repeatedly advised motorists to exercise caution while travelling in the area.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed condolences to the families of the victims and directed officials to provide all necessary assistance.
