New Delhi, June 14
All 14 Indian crew members aboard an Indian-flagged vessel were rescued after an emergency off the coast of Oman, the Indian Embassy in Muscat said on Sunday.
The embassy said the rescue operation involving the mechanised sailing vessel MSV Virat 1 had been successfully completed and all crew members were safe.
According to information gathered by Indian authorities, the vessel suffered an engine failure while operating off the Omani coast, forcing the crew to abandon the vessel and transfer to a liferaft.
The sailors were subsequently rescued by a nearby vessel, Jabal Ali 9, and are now en route to Mumbai, the embassy said in a post on X.
Indian diplomats had coordinated with Omani authorities and ships operating in the area after learning of the emergency.
The incident comes amid heightened concern over maritime safety in the Gulf region following recent attacks on commercial vessels. Indian authorities, however, said the Virat 1 incident appeared to have resulted from a technical malfunction rather than any hostile action.
