MLA Nagrota Devyani Rana on Saturday announced a Rs 25 lakh stormwater drainage and sewerage management project for Indira Colony in Dhok Waziran Panchayat, aimed at resolving long-standing drainage issues and paving the way for construction of a key road in the area.

According to a statement issued by the MLA’s office, the project seeks to provide a permanent solution to wastewater and drainage problems that have affected residents for several years and have been a major obstacle to road construction.

The proposed infrastructure will benefit residents of Ward No 2, particularly those living in Lanes 2 to 9 of Indira Colony, where locals had demanded resolution of drainage issues before road construction could begin.

Addressing residents during her visit, Rana said improving basic civic infrastructure remained one of her top priorities and assured that road construction would commence after completion of the drainage work.

“The residents of Dhok Waziran have faced considerable difficulties due to inadequate infrastructure. This project is intended to provide a scientific and long-term solution to the drainage problem while resolving the dispute that has delayed road construction since 2015,” she said.

The statement said Rana had directed the concerned departments to prepare a detailed plan after receiving repeated representations from residents. Following technical surveys and field assessments, a comprehensive drainage and sewerage project was formulated.

The project includes construction of a 97-metre RCC precast covered drain, a sump well with a storage capacity of 10,000 to 15,000 litres, installation of two 5 HP sewage submersible pumps – one operational and one standby – and laying of about 295.65 metres of HDPE pipeline for wastewater disposal.

Officials said the project is expected to benefit around 107 households by improving sanitation, preventing water stagnation and ensuring efficient wastewater management while accommodating future population growth.

The proposed infrastructure also incorporates engineering features such as self-cleansing flow gradients, automated pumping systems, emergency overflow arrangements and air-release mechanisms to ensure uninterrupted operation.

Once completed, the project is expected to improve stormwater and sewage management and facilitate construction of roads in the locality, a long-pending demand of residents.

Residents welcomed the announcement and thanked Rana for intervening in an issue that had remained unresolved for years. They said the initiative would help address persistent drainage problems and create conditions for further infrastructure development in the area.

The project is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen civic infrastructure and promote inclusive development across the Nagrota Assembly constituency, the statement said.
