6 drug peddlers arrested in north, south Kashmir: Police

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday said six alleged drug peddlers were arrested in separate operations across Baramulla, Anantnag, and Kulgam districts as part of an anti-narcotics campaign, and large quantities of contraband substances were recovered from their possession.

In a statement, Jammu and Kashmir Police said the arrests were made under the “100-Day Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyaan”.

In north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, a patrol team from Police Station Boniyar arrested a suspect during routine patrolling in the Trikanjan area.

Police identified the accused as Sabbir Mumtaz, a resident of Trikanjan, and said a charas-like substance wrapped in polythene was recovered from his possession.

A case under FIR No. 16/2026 under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered at Police Station Boniyar and an investigation has been initiated, police said.

In south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, Police Station Srigufwara arrested an alleged “most wanted” drug peddler during naka checking at Shakras, police said.

The accused, identified as Nasir Ahmad Dohbi of Sallar, was found carrying around 5 kg of charas powder-like substance, according to the statement.

Police registered FIR No. 52/2026 under relevant provisions of law at Police Station Srigufwara and launched an investigation.

In another operation in Anantnag, police arrested Irshad Ahmad Bhat of Magraypora during naka checking near Achabal petrol pump and recovered a heroin-like substance from his possession.

A case under FIR No. 41/2026 under the NDPS Act was registered at Police Station Achabal, police said.

In Kulgam district, police said a naka party at Chowgam Bridge intercepted Bilal Ahmad Hajam of Larkipora, Dooru, who was carrying a nylon bag containing around 4.52 kg of charas powder-like substance.

In a separate operation at the same location, police arrested Sameer Ahmad Sheikh of Bangedar, Anantnag, and recovered 157.7 grams of charas-like substance concealed in a polythene bag wrapped in corn husk, the statement said.

Another suspect, identified as Nazir Ahmad Rather of Sopat Tangpora, was arrested near Sopat link road after allegedly attempting to flee on spotting a police patrol.

Police said around 2.6 kg of poppy straw-like substance was recovered from a nylon bag in his possession.

All six accused were arrested and cases under relevant sections of law were registered at the respective police stations, police said, adding that further investigations were underway.
