NCW, KU hold programme on gender sensitisation, PoSH awareness

Registrar of the University of Kashmir Prof Naseer Iqbal said awareness about legal safeguards and institutional mechanisms was essential for creating a secure and inclusive academic atmosphere.

The National Commission for Women (NCW), in collaboration with the Department of Students Welfare at the University of Kashmir, on Tuesday organised a programme on “Gender Sensitisation and PoSH Awareness” at the university’s main campus.

The day-long programme focused on promoting awareness about gender sensitivity, workplace dignity and the provisions of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) Act, while encouraging a safe and inclusive environment for women in educational and professional spaces.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kashmir Prof Mohiuddin Sangmi said educational institutions had an important role in promoting gender sensitivity, mutual respect and safe working environments.

Highlighting the university’s association with the NCW, he said the institution had consistently organised awareness and outreach programmes on gender equality, women’s rights and social responsibility.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, in her keynote address, stressed the importance of awareness about laws related to the safety and protection of women in domestic and workplace settings.

She also referred to the contributions of several women from Kashmir who had played important roles in society through leadership, courage and intellectual contributions.

The programme included a technical session on the functioning of the National Commission for Women by NCW Media Advisor Shivam Garg, who spoke about the commission’s role in addressing women-related issues across the country.

Another session on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Act was conducted by NCW counsellor Tunika Sharma, who highlighted the role of Internal Committees in institutions and workplaces and stressed the need for timely reporting and redressal mechanisms.

The event was attended by faculty members, research scholars and students from across the university campus.

The proceedings were conducted by Cultural Officer, Department of Students Welfare, Shahid Ali Khan, while the vote of thanks was delivered by NCW Deputy Director Ramavatar Singh.
