Lieutenant General Balbir Singh on Friday assumed charge as the General Officer Commanding of the Srinagar-based XV Corps, strengthening the Army’s leadership in Kashmir amid ongoing counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations.
Headquartered in Srinagar, the Chinar Corps is responsible for guarding the Line of Control in Kashmir and overseeing internal security operations across the Valley.
Lt Gen Singh previously served as Major General General Staff at the Northern Command and has extensive operational experience in Jammu and Kashmir.
An alumnus of the Indian Military Academy, he earlier served at the 8 Sector headquarters in Lolab in Kupwara district and later commanded 1 Sector of the Rashtriya Rifles during 2018-2019.
In 2023, as a Major General, he took over as General Officer Commanding of Counter Insurgency Force Victor, based in Awantipora in south Kashmir, where he oversaw anti-militancy operations in the region.
His appointment comes at a time when security forces continue to maintain a heightened counter-insurgency grid across Jammu and Kashmir.
