The 96th death anniversary of Maulana Ahmadullah Shah, a noted Islamic scholar and former president of Anjuman Nusrat-ul-Islam, was observed in Srinagar on Saturday with religious gatherings and tributes.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who is also the president of Anjuman Nusrat-ul-Islam, paid homage to the late scholar, recalling his religious, social and educational contributions to Kashmir.
He described Maulana Ahmadullah Shah as a devoted follower of Islamic teachings and a symbol of humility and moral integrity, noting his influence on religious education and reform in the region.
The Mirwaiz said the scholar was among the early voices in Kashmir to speak against oppression and advocate for the restoration of political and social rights. He also recalled his association with historical petitions submitted to the British-era administration.
Tributes were also held at Islamia Higher Secondary School, Rajouri Kadal, where speakers highlighted his role in strengthening educational institutions under the Anjuman Nusrat-ul-Islam, including the establishment of Islamia Oriental College.
A Quran recitation gathering was also organised for the ‘Esal-e-Sawab’ of the departed scholar, along with prayers for other founders and members of the organisation.
