India ready to support peace efforts in West Asia: PM Modi tells UAE president

In his opening remarks, PM Modi condemned the attacks on the UAE amid the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India was ready to extend all possible support to help restore peace in West Asia during talks with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi.

The meeting took place shortly after he arrived in the United Arab Emirates in the first leg of his five-nation tour that will also take him to four European countries.

In his opening remarks, PM Modi condemned the attacks on the UAE amid the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

“The way UAE has been targeted is not acceptable,” he said praising the Gulf nation for handling the situation with restraint “The way UAE has handled the current situation with restraint is praiseworthy.”

The UAE, which hosts a major US military base, has faced Iranian strikes during the conflict.

PM Modi said the impact of the West Asia crisis was being felt globally and reiterated India’s support for efforts aimed at de-escalation.

“India is ready to extend all possible support to bring peace in West Asia,” he said.

The PM was received at the airport by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and was accorded a guard of honour, underscoring the importance attached by the UAE to the visit.

In a post on social media, PM Modi thanked the UAE president for the “gracious gesture” of receiving him at Abu Dhabi airport.

He said he looked forward to discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation between India and the UAE in sectors including energy, investment and supply chains.
