Leader of the Opposition in Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Sunil Sharma on Saturday alleged that the ruling National Conference (NC) was facing deep internal divisions and warned that any expansion within the party could trigger a split.
Sharma, a senior leader of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Leader of the Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly, made the remarks while referring to recent protests at the NC headquarters in Srinagar.
“The disease has gone so deep that they have no cure,” Sharma told reporters, accusing some leaders within the party of worsening internal tensions through repeated attacks on the BJP.
“If they do even a small expansion, the National Conference will be divided into two parts,” he said.
The NC, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, is one of the region’s main political parties and currently heads the government in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sharma compared the situation within the NC to the split in Maharashtra’s Shiv Sena party, which fractured into rival factions in 2022 following an internal rebellion.
“No matter how much they try, the house is broken,” Sharma said.
He, however, denied that the BJP had any role in the alleged tensions within the NC.
“Neither do we believe in it,” he said, referring to attempts to engineer political defections.
There was no immediate response from the National Conference to Sharma’s remarks.
