Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that discussions around two long-standing policy proposals – a Uniform Civil Code and simultaneous national and state elections – were progressing in what he described as a “positive direction,” signaling continued momentum on key elements of his party’s agenda.
Speaking virtually at an event marking his party’s foundation day, Modi framed the initiatives as part of an unfinished mission, while emphasizing what he called a broader record of governance and reform.
“Our mission is still ongoing,” he said. “Serious discussions are taking place in the country, and we are moving in a positive direction.”
The proposal for simultaneous elections, often referred to as ‘One Nation, One Election,’ would align voting for the national Parliament and state assemblies, a shift proponents argue could reduce costs and administrative burdens.
Critics, however, have raised concerns about its implications for federalism and democratic accountability.
The Uniform Civil Code, another longstanding and contentious issue, seeks to establish a common set of laws governing matters such as marriage, divorce and adoption, replacing religion-specific personal laws.
Supporters say it would promote equality, while opponents warn it could erode cultural and religious diversity.
In his address, PM Modi also took aim at the opposition, particularly the Congress party, accusing it of a history of political repression.
He referenced the Emergency period of the 1970s and alleged that party workers had faced violence in certain states.
The PM highlighted a series of legislative and policy measures undertaken during his tenure, including the repeal of colonial-era laws, the construction of a new Parliament building, a 10 percent reservation for economically weaker sections among the general category, a law banning instant Triple Talaq, the Citizenship Amendment Act, and the building of a temple in Ayodhya.
“These are the results of honest efforts,” he said, presenting them as evidence of his party’s commitment to governance.
PM Modi also struck an emotional note, describing his party as one in which members view the organisation as a “mother,” and calling its foundation day more than a political observance.
“It is an emotional occasion,” he said. “It gives us an opportunity to express gratitude for the chance to serve the nation.”
