Jammu, April 3
Christians in Jammu observed Good Friday with solemn prayers and a procession that drew hundreds of worshipers, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
The observance was centered at St Peter’s Catholic Church Prem Nagar, where the faithful gathered after a procession that began at Candle Church Chowk in the city’s Christian Colony.
Moving through Residency Road and Vivekananda Chowk, participants carried crosses and walked in silence, reflecting on themes of sacrifice and redemption.
A reenactment of the Stations of the Cross – a ritual depiction of the final hours of Jesus – formed the centerpiece of the event, with participants symbolically retracing his suffering and death.
In his homily, Rev Father Brabin Jany, assistant parish priest, spoke about the enduring significance of the Cross, describing it as a symbol of divine love and a source of meaning amid contemporary challenges.
“The Cross is the sign of God’s greatest love,” he said, urging the faithful to reflect on its message of sacrifice and moral renewal.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Parish Priest Father Arul Nirmal, who acknowledged the support of local authorities, including the police and municipal officials, in facilitating the event.
The observance of Good Friday marks one of the most solemn days in the Christian calendar and precedes Easter Sunday, which commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is widely seen as a symbol of hope and renewal.
