As tensions in West Asia threaten to disrupt global supply chains and unsettle prices, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday convened a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), directing senior officials to assess vulnerabilities and reinforce safeguards across critical sectors.
The meeting, the second in recent days on the issue, underscored growing concern within the government over the ripple effects of the conflict on essential commodities, energy supplies and economic stability.
Officials said the discussions centered on maintaining steady supplies, containing price volatility and coordinating responses across ministries.
Senior bureaucrats outlined contingency measures spanning agriculture, fertilizers, shipping, aviation, logistics and small businesses.
Among the key strategies under review were diversifying sources of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG), adjusting fuel duties and ensuring the resilience of the power sector ahead of peak summer demand.
Officials said that the government has stepped up monitoring of essential goods, warning of strict action against hoarding and black-market activity.
Control rooms have been established to track price movements and coordinate enforcement with states and union territories under the Essential Commodities Act.
Particular attention was given to fertilizer supplies, a critical concern ahead of the Kharif and Rabi cropping seasons. Authorities reported ongoing efforts to sustain domestic urea production while strengthening ties with overseas suppliers for key inputs such as DAP and NPK fertilizers.
According to officials familiar with the meeting, PM Modi emphasized the need to shield citizens from the fallout of the conflict. He also called for clear and timely public communication to counter misinformation and prevent panic.
Briefings to the committee indicated that petroleum supplies remain stable, with imports of LPG and LNG being diversified across multiple countries.
Domestic LPG prices, officials noted, have remained unchanged, while enforcement actions against diversion and hoarding continue.
The government is also expanding piped natural gas connections to reduce reliance on cylinder-based distribution.
In the power sector, measures have been introduced to ensure uninterrupted supply during the summer months.
These include exempting certain gas-based power plants from pooling mechanisms and increasing coal availability at thermal stations.
Officials said food prices have remained largely stable over the past month, though close monitoring of vegetables, fruits and other agricultural produce is ongoing.
States have been urged to intensify enforcement efforts against market distortions.
Beyond domestic measures, the government is also pursuing international coordination to secure energy routes and ensure the safe passage of vessels through critical chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz.
The meeting concluded with a directive from the prime minister for all departments to remain vigilant, strengthen coordination across levels of government and take proactive steps to minimize the impact of the unfolding global situation on households and key industries.
