Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said the central government was closely monitoring the flood situation in Jammu and Kashmir and assured all possible assistance to J&K after torrential rain triggered flash floods and landslides that left at least 11 people dead in Rajouri and Poonch districts of Pir Panjal region.

Shah said he had spoken to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to assess the situation and review the ongoing rescue and relief operations in the flood-hit districts.

He said the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with the Army, police and local authorities, was engaged in relief efforts and that the Centre remained in constant touch with the administration.

The floods, triggered by intense overnight rainfall, inundated large parts of Rajouri and Poonch, damaging homes, roads, power infrastructure and hundreds of vehicles, while rescue teams continued searching for people reported missing.

Authorities evacuated hundreds of residents as heavy rain disrupted normal life across the Pir Panjal region.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said the administration was working on a war footing to provide relief and restore essential services in the affected areas.

He said all district authorities had been directed to ensure timely assistance to affected families and expedite damage assessment and rehabilitation measures.
