Srinagar, July 18

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday extended the summer vacation for all government and recognised private schools in Kashmir and the winter zones of Jammu until July 22, citing prevailing weather conditions as the region continues to grapple with an intense spell of heat.

The decision was announced by Education Minister Sakeena Itoo, who said the extension had been approved in view of the continuing weather conditions affecting the region.

The order applies to all schools in the Kashmir Division as well as those located in the winter zones of Jammu Division.

The extension comes after Srinagar recorded its highest temperature of the season earlier in the day, while the India Meteorological Department forecast a shift in weather from July 19, with widespread rain and thunderstorms expected across Jammu and Kashmir over the following several days.

Authorities have also warned of the possibility of heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.
