Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President S Radhakrishnan on Friday paid tribute to Imam Hussain on the occasion of Ashura, saying his sacrifice continues to inspire people to uphold truth, justice and courage in the face of adversity.

In a message posted on social media platform X, Modi said the martyrdom of Imam Hussain remains a timeless symbol of moral conviction and steadfast commitment to justice.

“The sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) continues to inspire many people to remain steadfast in the pursuit of truth and justice. It is also a reminder of the enduring power of courage and conviction,” the prime minister wrote.

Vice President C P Radhakrishnan also remembered Imam Hussain’s sacrifice, describing Muharram as an occasion that reinforces the values of courage, compassion, and commitment to justice.

“Muharram reminds us of the values of courage, sacrifice, compassion, and steadfast commitment to truth and justice,” Radhakrishnan said in a separate message, expressing hope that the occasion would strengthen harmony, peace, and mutual respect in society.

Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), at the Battle of Karbala in present-day Iraq in 680 CE.

The occasion is marked by mourning processions, prayers, and religious gatherings by Shia Muslims across India and around the world, while many Sunni Muslims also hold congregations reflecting on the moral lessons of Karbala.
