Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed a memorandum linked to the US-Iran peace initiative on Thursday, formalising Islamabad’s role as a guarantor of an agreement aimed at ending months of conflict in the Middle East.
Sharif’s office said the document, already signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, reflected Pakistan’s involvement in mediation efforts that helped bring the two sides to the negotiating table.
Pakistan and Qatar played key roles in facilitating contacts between Washington and Tehran, diplomats said, helping secure an initial ceasefire before broader talks progressed towards the current agreement.
Sharif welcomed the accord as a diplomatic achievement and said it would contribute to regional stability by reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reducing tensions across West Asia.
The Pakistani leader praised both American and Iranian negotiators and credited regional partners, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkiye and Egypt, for supporting the peace process.
Officials said a further gathering involving representatives from multiple countries was expected in Switzerland, where negotiators would discuss implementation and the next phase of talks.
Analysts said Pakistan’s involvement enhances its diplomatic profile and underscores its efforts to position itself as a mediator in regional conflicts.
