Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has convened a meeting of all National Conference legislators and independent MLAs supporting the government on June 3 at his Gupkar residence in Srinagar amid continuing uncertainty over restoration of statehood, mounting governance concerns and heightened political speculation over the stability of the ruling dispensation.

The meeting assumes significance as it comes less than a month after the National Conference (NC) held its high-level Working Committee meeting in Srinagar on May 7 under the chairmanship of party president Farooq Abdullah, where senior leaders reviewed governance, political developments and organisational matters.

The June 3 meeting, to be chaired by Omar Abdullah, has been described by party insiders as a serious political and administrative exercise rather than a routine consultation, particularly as such interactions with legislators are not usually held in close succession.

Invitations have been issued to all NC MLAs and four independent legislators supporting the government, asking them to attend what has been termed an “important meeting” at Gupkar. According to the invitation, discussions will centre on matters of “collective importance” and “issues concerning public welfare,” with attendance made mandatory.

Congress legislators supporting the Omar Abdullah-led government have not been invited so far. However, party insiders downplayed any political significance, saying the consultation is intended primarily to assess governance and constituency-level concerns within the party.

The absence of a formally circulated agenda has nevertheless triggered speculation in political circles over the timing and purpose of the meeting, especially against the backdrop of recent opposition attacks and questions raised over the government’s stability.

Amid the speculation, Omar Abdullah addressed the issue publicly through a post on X, appearing to dismiss commentary around the meeting.

“I love how the people who know the least about the meeting I’ve called with my MLAs are talking the most. Remember one thing – those who know don’t speak and those who speak sit in the opposition,” he wrote.

Political observers viewed the remarks as a response to repeated assertions by BJP leaders, particularly Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, who recently claimed that the government was facing internal strain and could collapse.

NC legislators, however, rejected suggestions that the meeting had been called in response to political instability or any imminent organisational reshuffle.

Party legislators said the interaction is expected to provide MLAs an opportunity to directly raise constituency grievances, developmental bottlenecks, public complaints and administrative concerns before the chief minister.

According to legislators, governance-related issues and continued uncertainty over restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood are likely to figure prominently during the deliberations.

“The Chief Minister wants to hear directly from MLAs about the problems and issues being faced by people. There are developmental concerns, constituency matters and complaints related to functioning of departments that need to be discussed,” an NC legislator said on condition of anonymity.

Another MLA said the timing of the meeting is particularly important as public expectations regarding restoration of statehood remain unfulfilled while legislators continue to face pressure on the ground over governance and local issues.

While party leaders privately ruled out any major political announcement emerging from the June 3 meeting, they said the consultation is expected to focus on governance coordination, administrative responsiveness, constituency concerns and the evolving political situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting is being closely watched in political circles as it comes at a time of continued uncertainty over statehood, intensifying opposition criticism and growing pressure on elected representatives to address local grievances.
