Local residents in Srinagar planted 500 deodar saplings in a single day during a community-led afforestation drive in the Dignibal Forest Block, officials said.
The plantation initiative, carried out under the Estate Range of the Urban Forestry Division, was organised by citizens without the involvement of any non-governmental organisation, reflecting growing public participation in environmental conservation.
Volunteers, including educators, medical professionals and environmental enthusiasts, took part in the drive aimed at promoting ecological restoration and increasing green cover in the region.
The effort was supported by the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department, which provided saplings and technical assistance to ensure proper plantation and maintenance.
Forest officials, including Chief Conservator Irfan Rasool Wani, oversaw the activity along with field staff.
Participants said the initiative was motivated by growing environmental concerns, including changing weather patterns, rising temperatures and pressures from urbanisation.
They expressed hope that similar community-driven efforts would be replicated across Kashmir to strengthen local responses to climate challenges.
